COVID Case | OBX Connection Message Board (6)

To share what this can look like, I just spoke with the super of our building. For those who aren't familiar with the term, the super is a sort of jazzed-up janitor who takes care of a lot of building cleaning and maintenance stuff. In our case, we have a jazzed-up cleaning lady, a naturalized immigrant from Montenegro, who takes out the garbage and vacuums the hallways, etc.

Our super told me tonight that her cousin died of COVID a few days ago. He was 52 yo, in excellent health as far as anyone knows, and lived in "rural" Monticello NY, at the foot of the Catskills for those who are familiar with the area.

For about a week, he thought he had a cold and nursed it the way he normally would. Came into NYC to visit with the extended family, and started having problems breathing. They took him to New York Hospital where he was put on a ventilator almost immediately. He was dead within a week. From first symptoms to death was about 2 weeks.

I keep hearing about the speed with which this will progress to death.

Be careful, stay away from others, and be safe.

Stay safe Crunch. I know you are doing what you can, I just want to say it anyway.

I am ready for this to be over. (as we all are) When I hear how different things are from state to state it feels impossible. I am in Ohio, and as many know we have "social distancing" for 4 weeks. This is great because our build-up has been gradual and our hospitals can handle it. But its also bad, because our state health director says our peak isnt due until late April, mid-May. When you think of the entire country ebbing and flowing at different times, its seems inevitable that this is going to go on for quite a while. Thanks, Nicki, and same to you and your family.

Yes, it will go on for a while, and we'll have to start thinking at some point about a 2nd wave.

I can't emphasize enough that social distancing works, as simple as it seems. Deaths here have started to level off at 600 per day, which may be a trend. That's still 600 too many, but it has stayed at that level for the last two days.

Despite all the noise to the contrary, the avenues and streets here on the west side are almost deserted. Nobody is out, nobody is around, nothing non-essential is open, vehicular traffic is almost non-existent. Hundreds of thousands of people are staying home. If the virus is out, there aren't a whole lot of human beings for it to spend time with.

A zip code map a few days ago showed the heaviest concentration of NYC cases in Brooklyn, near or in some of the Hasidic communities there. Those communities are very tight-knit and social, and may have had some connection to the Hasidic communities in New Rochelle. Social distancing might have been weak there.

The two family members in the hospital are still there, and stable, for now. They lived in Brooklyn, not far from the hot spots.

Crunch and nicki, I appreciate hearing from you both about what is and has been happening where you live. Personal stories help turn numbers into real people and yet, I know there's no way it can be real unless it has happened to someone with whom you've shared a relationship be it with the Super, or one's sister-in-law.

Things seem quieter than ever in the little island town of Manteo. We sometimes talk to our neighbors from across the street, or over the fence...with plenty of distance, though these days it's hard to know how far is far enough.

Keep checking back in. I hope this thread can stay focussed and not get flagged away.

Be careful friends.

This model says you are peaking way earlier than that. Hope it is correct.

Dear Crunch,

Please give us an update. Many here do not live in the NYC metro area, or other hotspots. I listened to Governor Cuomo today...and as he said, there is the good and the bad...and how one tries to wrap one's head and heart about them. I am paraphrasing. I wish I had his exact words.

I'll get in touch privately but I know I am not the only reader of the OBX Connection who cares.
