Evangelical fundamentalism is rapidly on the rise in Brazil, with popular TV evangelists calling on their supporters to back ultraconservative presidential candidates whose campaign promises are focused on banning abortion rights and gender neutral toilets.This religious influence dragged the country to its lowest point during the pandemic, when, rather than importing vaccines and oxygen, the Bolsonaro government called on the population to pray harder. The result was a record 700,000 Covid-related deaths.Filmmaker Petra Costa previously made the Oscar-nominated documentary The Edge of Democracy (2019), about the global growth of polarization and extreme political violence. In this film she looks at whether Brazil is headed toward becoming a theocracy. She speaks, for example, with the country’s current president Lula, and with TV evangelist Silas Malafaia, who helped Bolsonaro to victory in 2018. His apocalyptic theology provides an alarming backdrop to news footage of mass political and religious gatherings, in an urgent and exemplary portrait of a young democracy that’s hanging on by a thread.

In het New York van 1971-72 streden John Lennon en Yoko Ono op geheel eigen wijze voor een betere wereld. Achttien maanden lang verbleven ze in een appartement in Greenwich Village, waar ze gelijkgestemden ontmoetten en veel tv keken: “Een venster op de wereld”, volgens Lennon. Voor de film is het appartement nagebouwd, waardoor het lijkt alsof je bij het duo voor de tv zit. Via de beeldbuis trekt in sneltreinvaart de wereld uit die tijd voorbij. De nieuwsflitsen, met de Vietnamoorlog als rode draad, fragmenten uit talkshows, reclames en speelfilms laten de jaren zeventig opeens heel dichtbij komen. Bijzonder zijn de niet eerder vertoonde homevideo’s van Lennon en Ono en de telefoongesprekken, verbeeld als hedendaags WhatsApp-gesprek. De impact van het vele tv-kijken leidt tot het succesvolle benefietconcert One to One voor kinderen met fysieke en geestelijke beperkingen. De twee shows op 30 augustus 1972 zouden Lennons enige lange optredens zijn tussen het laatste geplande Beatles-concert in 1966 en zijn dood in 1980. Een kleurrijke, muzikale, ontroerende en ontluisterend actuele beeldreis door een bijzonder roerig tijdsgewricht.
