Closer ties with the French government allowed China to purchase a selection of French-originated battlefield solutions which, in turn, were reengineered and - in some cases - further developed to better suit Chinese industry and local requirements. The "HQ-7" is one such product operated by the People's Liberation Army Ground Force of China. It is a self-propelled anti-aircraft solution used in the low-altitude, short-ranged air defense role with mobility provided through a 6x6 wheeled arrangement. The missile launcher (with integrated radar) sits over the hull roof with the crew provided protection from small arms fire and artillery spray. The missiles are a Chinese evolution of the French "Crotale" system (detailed elsewhere on MilitaryFactory.com) of same form-and-function. About 200 are held in the active PLAGF active inventory. The vehicle is known to NATO as "CH-SA-4". The vehicle has hinged side entry doors and a twin-windshield cab with side-by-side seating. Access hatches are noted over the hull roof. The forward placement of the crew results in the powerpack being set at the rear of the hull. Over the middle is the launcher component which sits on a trainable mounting allowing for elevation and traversal. Roadwheels are large and split across three total axels - one forward and two rear. The vehicle does not have noticeable ground clearance, limiting its cross-country capabilities. Original production forms fell under the HQ-7A designation. Its improved form became the HQ-7B. A navalized variant was developed as the HHQ-7. The series has seen export as the FM-80 (HQ-7A), FM-90 (HQ-7B), and the FM-90N (FM-90, navy).
