20-E THE PLAIN DEALER, SUNDAY, MARCH 13, 1994 Manipulating space can make room seem larger a BLAIR PITTMAN Homeowner and architect did big things to small space. By GAY ELLIOTT MCFARLAND HOME FOCUS SYNDICATE Most of us don't live in palatial spaces. Certainly not apartment. condo, town house and vintage World War II-house residents, anyway. But, aside from moving out or totally gutting the structure, what's to be done with chintzy quarters? What indeed? If we're canny, we'll manipulate the spaces we have (rather than letting them manipulate us) so we can come up with solutions for making rooms seem larger and more commodious than they really are.

These remedies may range from using the few easy pieces), to using decorative paint or less-is-more theory (throwing out all but a architectural techniques, to utilizing symmetry and scale for a more-is-better approach. The latter is the approach that one city dweller used in his 800-square-foot highrise living room and bedroom. "We needed to put a lot of belongings into a compact area," said the man's architect. Both the living room (which the homeowner did on his own) and the bedroom (where the architect and his associates worked) embrace the architect's philosophies. "We always should use light, pale colors to make a room seem larger, he said.

"Not true. Darker, richer colors cause walls to take on depth and to recede. (This condo's living room is deep red. The bedroom is dark green.) "My rule of thumb is to create dark walls for a small space, light moldings and woodwork and mid-toned ceilings. When you are choosing colors, hold one of the hues at a 90-degree angle against the other so you can see what kind of contrast you'll really have," said the architect who learned these "receding" techniques when he was doing stage set design in college.

Applying ceiling molding is one of his favorites. "Using 6- to 10-inch molding accentuates the height of a ceiling and adds detail to a room. "I'm not talking about using heavily carved molding. Rather, it's better to use simple (but deep) pieces. The point of using the molding in a room with standard 8-foot ceilings is to create shadow lines and linear planes.

The use of the molding tricks people into thinking the spaces are larger than they actually are," he said. "In the bedroom, the architect wanted the shelving and cabinets to provide an "interesting backdrop without intruding upon the room. Essentially, we created a new wall." he planned cabinets which would house the TV and stereo. "Everything in the cabinet fits perfectly. slides out swivels," he said. The normal routine would have been to place the TV smack-dab in front of the bed rather than to push it into a side-wise corner, said the architect. "But with the right hardware and equipment, the TV can swivel into place rather than having to sit in an awkward place." He also suggested that artful lodgers use light for drama as well as for illumination.

Overhead lighting is great when you need to clean the room," he said, "but to make a small room look larger, you need to highlight objects and areas. To do this, bring lighting up from the floor with cannister -lights The idea? The more dimensions you can create, the more interesting your room is going to be." Other ambitious ways to outsmart space shortage is "to go beyond the paintbrush," say the editors of House Beautiful Decorating Style (Hearst Books, $30). "Such techniques involve architectural elements like platforms, columns, varied ceiling heights and built-ins." A platform can visually separate a dining area from a living area, even though both are contained within the same room. Ditto for columns that can divide living areas and conquer the lack-of-individual-rooms problem. Other suggestions: Use low luster paint rather than highgloss.

Opt for continuous floor surfaces instead of single rugs. (Something like sisal floor matting, for instance, can create a sophisticated underfoot expanse.) Choose a round dining table rather than a square on if quarters are cramped. Use mirrors and see-through tabletops if they fit your decorative scheme. Make every room and every piece of furniture function on as many different levels as possible. A tabletop can be a desk, a surface for buffet or formal meal.

In the kitchen, make full use of walls by attaching shelves or pegboard, and put the ceiling to work by turning it into pots and pans storage. Living in small spaces does not mean you have to live a scaled-down lifestyle. It just means you have to use your creativity to corral every inch of space..
